Driftwood Conscious Connected Breathwork - Terms & Conditions

The following conditions are contraindications for active, Conscious Connected Breathwork. If you have any of these conditions, you should not participate in active sessions without written medical clearance, or you should be guided toward a very gentle, functional nasal breathing practice instead.

Cardiovascular Conditions

  1. Heart Disease and Related Issues — This includes a history of heart attacks, angina, heart failure, or any other significant cardiovascular condition. The increased heart rate and blood pressure that can occur during intense breathing may place undue stress on the heart.

  2. High Blood Pressure — If blood pressure is not well-controlled through medication, the physiological and emotional shifts of breathwork may cause a dangerous spike.

  3. Aneurysms — A history of aneurysms (or a strong family history) is a strict contraindication, as the shift in blood pressure could be dangerous.

Respiratory and Neurological Conditions

  1. Severe Asthma — Rapid or deep breathing can sometimes trigger a bronchospasm. Participants with mild asthma must have their rescue inhaler present and should only practice with a gentle, modified breath.

  2. Epilepsy — Deeper, faster breathing alters the carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which can increase the likelihood of seizure activity in susceptible individuals.

  3. Glaucoma and Detached Retina — Intense breathing patterns and breath holds can alter intra-ocular pressure, which can worsen these conditions or lead to further injury.

Mental Health and Psychological Conditions

  1. Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia — Breathwork can lead to altered states of consciousness that may trigger manic episodes or exacerbations of these conditions.

  2. Severe PTSD or Complex Trauma — While breathwork can be healing for trauma, in severe or unstable cases, it can lead to flooding or re-traumatisation. These individuals should only practice under the guidance of a qualified medical or mental health professional.

  3. Current Use of Heavy Medication — Those taking psychoactive or cardiovascular medications should consult their healthcare provider, as breathwork can influence how the body processes or reacts to these substances.

Physical and Life Stages

  1. Pregnancy — In the PRANABEAT method, active connected breathwork and breath holds are not recommended during pregnancy due to the altered oxygen/CO2 levels and potential stress responses. Gentle, slow nasal breathing is the only recommended practice.

  2. Recent Surgery — Any recent abdominal or thoracic surgery requires full healing and medical clearance, as the physical mechanics of deep breathing may interfere with the healing process.

  3. Osteoporosis — In cases of severe osteoporosis, the physical intensity of a session or somatic movements could potentially lead to fractures.

General Safety Rule

If you have a condition not listed here but feel uncertain, or if you are under the care of a specialist for a chronic illness, medical clearance is mandatory.
